How-To

Chapter 3: Going Out

Moving out into the world is difficult. Being vegan adds another challenge to overcome. Your mother shopping for you anymore. If you were lucky the matriarch left you a few tips on coupon clipping, how to tell if produce is ripe, and how to feed an army of teenagers while still meeting your food budget. Moving out also means you're going to experience a much wider variety of foods than you've ever seen before, if you're willing. Restaurants with foods stemming from all parts of the world are closer than you'd imagine. Thai, Ethiopian, Greek, and Indian restaurants have wide selections for the vegan palette.

Chapter 2: Relearning to Cook

Cooking for a vegan means many changes. You can't rely on eggs to make your cake rise. Milk is a no no. Your old favorite products hide non-vegan ingredients at every corner. First of all, you need to change your perspective on shopping. When you walk around your market, don't see foods you don't eat as food. They're merely a background tapestry as you walk toward the produce and bulk foods isle. Now, get the products you need and get your butt back in the ktichen.

Chapter 1: In the Beginning

Great, you've made the first step and told yourself you're going vegan. Congratulations on the right chioce. Unfortunately, its going to take a lot more than merely making the declaration. Going vegan is a lifelong learning process. I've heard of several people that just couldn't handle it in the long run. Many of them didn't get the diversity of foods their body needs, or their culinary abilities in the kitchen were lacking inspiration. You can't live on iceberg lettuce alone. The body craves and needs great diversity. Finding such diversity when you're still in high school and living with your parents can be challenging.

Going Vegan

Good, you've made the first step in going vegan. You made the decision. Its not that hard. Next time you're walking through the supermarket you'll start categorizing the products into food and non-food. Meet, dairy, eggs--not food. Fruits, vegetables, grains, rice--food! I hope my experiences in going vegan will help people just starting the journey to have an easier time.
